Summary

"The Shadow Riders" is the first book published by author Isabel Paterson, best known for her non-fiction political classic "The God of the Machine."

Lesley Johns works at the local newspaper in an up and coming town in Canada's western frontier of Alberta, where Channing Herrick moves in next door to her to convalesce from an illness. Lesley and Chan strike up a close friendship, but Chan's ambivalence and missteps leave her confused about the status of their relationship, and whether or not it will turn to something more serious.

Meanwhile, Chan's rich uncle, Ross Whittemore is working on a scheme to start a local streetcar franchise which involves behind the scenes political deal making to arrange. He gets Chan involved in local politics, and while the streetcar deal falls through, Chan becomes more and more deeply involved in politics.

Eileen Conway has been forced to leave town due to a scandalous secret. By chance, she meets up with Ross Whittemore who knows her secret. After a brief courtship, Whittemore proposes marriage, though he's not quite sure why. Eileen accepts, though she also is not quite sure why.

Follow an interesting cast of characters in a story of romance and political intrigue.

Original print length: 379 pages in 33 chapters.

Literature

While all books technically fall under this topic, we’ve reserved this mostly as a way to easily filter through the many hundred titles to find works of fiction (whether it be science fiction or dystopian novels), humor, poetry or quotes. The great manifestos are clearly labeled, as are Festschrifts, which are collections of writings published in honor of a scholar. Finally, we've included a range of biographies and autobiographies that shed light on some key individuals.

A note from the curator: With a variety of literature homeschool courses the Ron Paul Curriculum homeschool program does not disappoint. Western Literature, American Literature and Classic Autobiographies are covered in the high school years. My experience of literature in public school was horrendous and I wish I had the curriculum and approach provided by Ron Paul’s program instead.
